emerald’s Managing Director, Stuart Edgley (far left), and fellow leaders in the energy-efficient market, recently hosted a meeting with the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Kristina Keneally, and Chris Bowen the Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Energy. The objective of the meeting was to better understand the ALP’s climate policy leading into the 2022 Federal election.

Whilst emerald does not endorse any political party, we endeavour to engage with key decision makers to promote energy-saving activities. The meeting was an excellent opportunity to access the ALP’s understanding of the current state-based schemes and present our concerns at the lack of federal commitment for ‘Behind the Meter’ energy saving opportunities.

Both Kristina Keneally and Chris Bowen talked openly during the meeting. Mr Bowen stated that the ALP position was to engage in the ‘National Safeguard Mechanism’ then consider ‘Behind the Meter’ opportunities at a later date.

The ‘National Safeguard Mechanism’ builds on the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting scheme’s reporting and record keeping requirements. Together, the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting scheme and the Safeguard Mechanism help businesses measure, report and manage their emissions.
